Flood warning issued to residents along Vaigai bed

Flood warning has been issued for people living along the Vaigai bed as it is in spate.
According to reports, 5,600 cusecs was realised at Parthibanur regulator on Tuesday evening. Of which, 1,226 cusecs and 1,825 cusecs was discharged in Right Main Canal and Left Main Canal respectively. Around 2,545 cusecs had been let in the Vaigai, which carried water to the Big Tank in Ramanathapuram and a few more tanks. 

The people living along the Vaigai had been asked to move to safer areas. Many families, who had their tents in the middle of the river at Paramakudi were evacuated. The water, which was flowing from Viraganoor dam, had reached Paramakudi. A large number of people thronged the causeway in Paramakudi to witness the flood in Vaigai.
Since there was a report that discharge of water in the Vaigai might be increased if the rain continued in the catchment areas, the district administration stopped vehicular traffic on causeway across the Vaigai in Paramakudi.
Collector T.N. Hariharan said flood warning had been issued to the people living in low lying areas in the district particularly Nagatchi and Sevvur villages. They were asked to move to safer areas. Officials of Revenue, Police, Public Works Department, Fire and Rescue Service personnel were alerted to meet out eventualities.
Since there was a heavy downpour throughout the night on Monday, holiday was declared to schools as a precautionary measure. Many low lying areas in Ramanathapuram had been waterlogged, causing inconvenience to the residents. The following are the rainfall received during the last 24 hours that ended on Tuesday at 8.30 a.m. (in mm): Pallamorkulam-82, Ramanathapuram-75.30, Kadaladi-75.30, Valinokkam-50.20, Vattanam-47, Mandapam-30, R.S. Mangalam-31.20, Pamban-23.10, Paramakudi-20.40, Thondi-18.60, Kamudhi-14, Thangatchimadam-11, Thiruvadanai-5.30 and Rameswaram-4.20 mm.
